A Whistleblower in Dystopia (Based on '1984')

He was the type that kept his head down and followed orders. He was intelligent and did his job efficiently, but not too well as to attract attention. He believed however that there was something wrong with the system but feared being exposed too much to ever speak his mind. He never mentioned politics to his friends and always refused to give his opinion out of safety, but also out of fear the someone might report him. He was scared of insiders who might secretly be connected to higher officials. In truth he knew little of politics and always told himself that it is better to shut your mouth if you don't know all the facts. secretly his gut instincts told him however that the system was corrupt, that they were slowly and inexorably heading towards a police state, and he hated the fact that anytime the slightest slander or petty crime could be punished by exposure. What he feared most was being exposed, that maybe his misdemeanors from his youth would be brought up in court or publicly announced so that he would be under a spotlight with a whole crowd of deranged fanatics shouting "down with the pervert!" He never drank or took recreational drugs out of fear that his conscience would betray him. He avoided any form of ostentatiousness because it would attract attention and there could be agents or insiders there. There would be show trials and secret arrests, there would be tv shows where evil doers who had converted to the state police would proudly wear their new badge of honor. Maybe they would make a deal with him, they would show him what it meant to be a policeman and how to deal with real criminals, the they would take him aside and say "we also know about your petty crimes, about your porn, about your activities, but we know it is eating you inside and that you simply demand that your slate be cleansed. Don't worry it will all be possible if you simply believe in us and support our cause, if you stopped this silly rebellious political correctness. Like a father figure, like a Christ like figure, they would swoop down and carry him aloft under their wing and free him. But he should have stayed adamant and accepted the punishment, because the pain was a batter palliative. He knew that what he was being punished for was not the real crime. It was for dissent, for apostasy. "You know what. We'll even give you access and privileges to your own secret stash of recreational drugs and booze, we'll let you continue to a limited extent your own unhealthy desires. Because we do that for our own kind. just as long as you accept that fact that you will never be a whistleblower again and that you will never disagree with the state. That you will denounce all whistleblowers as criminal immoral perverts." the process is gradual and almost imperceptible. It starts by slowly reducing the number of times people come by your house. People stop seeing you and they just disappear.
